So, what happens to plastic once you have dropped it into your recycle bin?
The process of plastic recycling in the UK
Plastics are predominantly sorted automatically alongside a manual sort. This is to make sure all foreign materials are removed.
Once the plastic has been sorted all the items are thoroughly cleaned. Then they are sorted by the type of plastic they are made from.
Now the plastics are all cleaned and separated into their various types, the sorting process continues and the plastic is arranged by colour: blue, natural, green and mixed.
There are two things that can happen next. 1. The plastic can be melted down directly and molded into a new shape. 2. The plastic can be shredded into flakes before it is washed and melted for processing into granulates.
Once in granulate form the plastic is reformed into pellets. These plastic pellets can be used to make all kinds of day to day products. For example: Clothing like fleeces or football shirts, plastic toys, chairs and tables, plastic bottles, bin liners and carrier bags, flooring and window frames, plastic cases for items like CD’s, fences, duvets and other office accessories.
